Kira Theine's Studio

About Kira Theine

Kira Theine is a native of Washington State and attended Western Washington university in Bellingham, WA where she received a Bachelor of Music History and Literature degree in March 2002.

While at WWU, she was able to travel all over the Northwest as well as Hungary and Italy for performances with the group, Collegium Musicum, of which she was a member from 1998-2002.

After graduation, she moved to the Olympia area where she has taught piano and flute lessons since.

Philosophy and Outline of Lessons

I try to make learning the piano and/or flute as enjoyable as possible.  I try to make sure that my students have pieces that they want to play.  My typical repertoire for each student consists of a “song” book, an exercise book, and a theory type book.  There are many variations of this, but this is the basis for which all of my students receive their books.

Each school year (September to June) will consist of weekly lessons and four group lessons, where there is no private lesson that week.  The group lessons are, for the most part, on different days and times than normal lessons.  Group lessons are not optional.  In group lessons, I am able to teach my students a little Music History, which gives them insight into why they play the music they play or how the music they play came to be.  I also have students perform for each other, have them play duets and a music related game.

There are also several opportunities for my students to perform throughout the year.  I offer two recitals, one in November and one in May.  I also have students participate in the Masterworks competition at the end of April/beginning of May.  None of these are required, but I strongly suggest participation.  By performing for others, a student gains self-confidence in their abilities and becomes used to performing in front of a crowd.

Summer lessons are encouraged, but not required.  If you take two or three months off, a lot of what was learned will be lost and takes time to remember the following year.  This can be frustrating to a student.  Summer lessons are held on Mondays, typically from 10 AM until 5 or 6 PM.
